We decided to abandon the hard candy and attempt the cotton candy sugar. After the second attempt, quite a bit of cotton candy was building up in the device. I told you I have mad cotton candy making skills! Unfortunately, even with my mad skills, there is still a learning curve. She proclaimed it “sour” but I guess that happens when you make cotton candy out of Country Time hard candy. This is Josie’s first sample of cotton candy. And even with my mad cotton candy skills, I left a good bit of candy in the device. 2 hard candies don’t generate a ton of cotton candy. Fortunately, I rocked a cotton candy maker during a summer job many, many years ago. It takes a lot of skill to get the cotton candy around these plastic cones. Unfortunately, the candy doesn’t stick to these cones very well at all. The candy machine comes with 2 reusable plastic cones. The cotton candy “web” starts building in a few minutes. As the candy melts, it spins out into cotton candy strands. The candy goes in a dish in the center which then heats up and spins. Josie selected 2 purple Country Time candies from the pack. The directions instruct you to use no more than 2 hard candies at a time to prevent clogs. The refill pack included traditional cotton candy sugar, Country Time Lemonade flavored hard candy and Crystal Light flavored sugar-free candy. Fortunately, my sister’s gift also included this refill pack. Which is good because the device doesn’t come with anything to make candy from. You can make cotton candy with any hard candy. While Daddy unpacks, Josie pounces on bubble wrap! The device is assembled. She woke to discover a busload of strangers staring at her and her husband laughing his ass off. She woke herself with a snort that shook the bus. Soon after, she went into a sugar coma while riding the airport shuttle. We waited in the hotel lobby for the shuttle to the airport and Mindy was on a sugar high. This was on the last day of the trip and we had checked out of our hotel room. On our honeymoon, my wife ate an entire bucket of cotton candy in one sitting. Let me say up front that my wife and kids love cotton candy. Since I’m reporting back, I figured I’d share with all of you in case anyone else had a burning desire to spin cotton candy out of Jolly Ranchers. So, we’re supposed to report back our findings. She was considering buying one for her kids, but wanted to see how it worked first. My sister proudly announced that she was using us as guinea pigs for this device. The machine melts hard candy and spins it into strands of cotton candy. The answer, as it turns out, is a cotton candy machine. With that warning in mind, we were curious and perhaps a bit apprehensive to see what Sarah had come up with as a Christmas gift/vengeance served several years cold. This year, my niece informed my wife that Josie’s present was “payback” for a noisy toy train my wife had bought our nephew when he was a toddler. As a result, you never really know what to expect when the kids open a present from Aunt Sarah. She has an almost irrational hatred of clutter and includes toys in this category. My sister prides herself on giving creative gifts. It’s the day after Christmas and the house is overflowing with toys. The girls (in matching Rapunzel nightgowns) prepare for their cotton candy adventure.
